Main goal:

In close cooperation with the medical staff of the emergency, intensive care and operating rooms, organizes and conducts orthopedic operations, provides pre- and postoperative surgical care in accordance with MSF procedures, protocols and universal hygiene standards in order to improve the health status of beneficiaries.

Responsibilities:

  • Strictly adhere to and apply the treatment of orthopedic beneficiaries in accordance with MSF protocols and recommendations in orthopedic surgery established by the MSF project and referees. Application of the principles of military surgery in the treatment of the wounded in war (internal fixation only for closed fractures). Ensuring that the overall management decision for each orthopedic beneficiary is known to all - including local staff - doctors and nurses. 
  • Conduct preoperative consultations, assess surgical risks together with the anesthesiologist and/or other medical staff, and obtain informed consent from the beneficiary for surgery.
  • Perform orthopedic surgery on MSF beneficiaries in accordance with MSF admission criteria, protocols and standards.
  • Conduct daily preoperative and postoperative examinations, assess needs of orthopedic beneficiaries and respond accordingly to identified problems. Ensure adequate follow-up of beneficiaries in the outpatient clinic and control of post-operative complications, informing hospital management and/or technical referent in a timely manner on the optimal management of such cases according to MSF protocols, standards and procedures.
  • Perform traction, splinting and casting for most closed fractures, and external fixation only for open or pelvic fractures.
  • Supervise appropriate maintenance of the register of operationsradio unit, register of internal fixations and register of postoperative infections. Ensure timely and complete completion of all relevant documentation, including surgical technique description after each operation and appointment letters for beneficiaries.
  • Supervise nurses' fulfillment of medication and other procedure appointments. Rational use of MSF-provided materials and equipment for orthopedics according to the needs of each beneficiary, avoiding requests for non-standard materials that are not available in the country or not provided for by MSF projects. Be responsible for the use of x-ray equipment in orthopedics and supervise that other staff adhere to these rules.
  • Plan, evaluate and monitor the training process of staff (emergency teams and outpatient services) to ensure the appropriate level of knowledge, as well as improve the effectiveness of diagnosis, triage of beneficiaries and early detection of pathologies.
  • Provide support to other medical teams or departments as needed.

Features of the MSF unit:

  • Work as an orthopedic surgeon MSFinKherson and Mykolaiv hospitals regions,observing living conditions permitted for security reasons (possible stay in a bunker), on a two-week rotation of shifts with tasksin the operationaland emergency department for the injured beneficiaries.
  • Collaborate with MOH hospital staff, including anesthetists, surgeons, nurses, and involved MSF professionals, including anesthesiologists.
  • Implement documentation and reporting using official MSF tools (e.g. Kobo) weekly or as needed as directed by MAM-Emergency and/or PMR.
  • Ensure proper use and accounting of MSF medical supplies and supplies in collaboration with MAM-Emergency and the Pharmaceutical Supply Manager.
  • Provide all necessary information to MAM-Emergency in a timely manner.
  • Maintain regular contact with MSF security representative to ensure compliance all safety precautions.
  • Be prepared to perform other necessary tasks as requested by MAM-Emergency and/or PMR.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Orthopedic surgeon certificate required

Experience:

  • Previous required work experience as an orthopedic surgeon; desirable experience in the field of traumatology and/ormilitary surgery.
  • Experience working in MSF or other non-governmental organizations in developing countries is preferred.
  • Experience in resource-constrained surgical settings is an advantage.

Knowledge languages: fluency in the Ukrainian language; knowledge of the English language is desirable.
