DescriptionYour role at GEI.This is an on-call position to support mussel survey and relocation projects within the Midwest. Our Ecological Team is currently seeking multiple positions for experienced Biologists located out of our Green Bay, WI; Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Duluth MN; or Marquette MI offices, with working knowledge of freshwater mussel identification and survey protocols for state and federally listed species in the State of Wisconsin. Dive Experience in large river systems, familiarity with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and/or US Fish and Wildlife survey protocols for mussel surveys, and previous experience identifying and cataloguing mussels is preferred. This position would be expected to work collaboratively on a large team of divers for a survey effort spanning multiple dive seasons.Essential Responsibilities & DutiesConduct mussel identification to the species level for all Wisconsin native mussel species.Conduct surveys and dives as required by WDNR to support construction phases of a large-scale bridge rebuild project.Identify, measure, and document collected mussel species to be used in the project reporting.Inspect and maintain dive equipment including minor repairs to tanks, regulators, and masks.Occasional operation of watercraft may be required.Work with contractors and subcontractors to complete work to project specification and agency standards.Draft daily monitoring reports to be used in mussel survey report and final project report and client meetings.Support Dive Team Lead and Project Manager with project tasks as assigned.Maintain appropriate safety, communication, and progress logs to be used for project tracking.Work under physically demanding conditions in variable weather and sometimes difficult terrain.Biologists may be required to spend multiple nights per week out of town working at project locations and to work irregular hours (30-55 hours per week, with overtime pay for more than 40 hours a week).Minimum QualificationsMinimum Associate’s Degree, with preference for Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Water Resources or Environmental Science areas of emphasis. Must have a current Dive Certification for Open Water Dives.2-3 years of direct dive experience.0-3 years of direct environmental consulting experience in the U.S. marketplace.Understanding of regulatory compliance for State and Federally listed Threatened and Endangered Species.Demonstrated ability to commit to a safety culture.Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.Willingness and ability to travel to project/client sites as required. Valid U.S. driver’s license.Desired QualificationsAdvanced Dive Certifications, including Advance Open Water, Rescue DiverBachelor’s Degree, with preference for Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Water Resources or Environmental Science areas of emphasis.
